Great Journeys

New Zealand's epic scale and beautiful scenery lend themselves perfectly to large scale journeys - by car and by train.

Great drives

New Zealand is a great place for a driving holiday. The New Zealand tourist board (Tourism New Zealand) has put together a selection of suggested tour-routes for drivers, lasting between three and twenty-five days. These include 'Themed Highways', such as the 'Twin Coast Discovery Highway' in the far north of the North Island, which takes in the Bay of Islands (see Top Ten Things to Do) and the Waipoua Kauri Forest (see Natural World), as well as the Ninety Mile Beach.

Great railway journeys

The most famous railway experience in New Zealand is the TranzAlpine Railway (see Top Ten Things to Do). But equally highly-rated is the Taieri Gorge Railway, in the south of the South Island. It offers a spectacular journey over viaducts and through tunnels to unparalleled views of some of New Zealand's most astonishing landscapes. Trains leave from Dunedin every day apart from Christmas Day, and make a round trip to Pukerangi (return journey of 4 hours) or Middlemarch (6 hours); connections to Queenstown and Central Otago are also possible.
